Truist Lifts Albemarle Target to $245 as Lithium Returns
Truist raised Albemarle (ALB) target to $245 from $210 — its third 2026 upgrade as lithium prices keep climbing and EV plus grid-storage demand outpaces supply.
Truist Sees the Lithium Reversal Confirmed
On April 22, Truist analyst Peter Osterland lifted his price target on Albemarle Corp. (NYSE: ALB) to $245 from $210 while reiterating a Buy. It is the third upgrade of 2026 alone: in January, Osterland flipped the rating from Hold to Buy and raised the target from $125 to $205; in March he pushed it to $210 after a non-deal roadshow. Now $245 — and the rationale has converged into one line: sustained momentum in lithium prices.
With this move Osterland also raised both his 2026 and 2027 earnings estimates. The thesis: demand from electric vehicles and grid-scale battery storage continues to outpace supply growth, and that gap is structural, not cyclical.
Why This Matters Beyond a Single-Stock Call
After the brutal lithium drawdown of 2024-25 — spot prices cut by more than three quarters from the peak — the sector was simply abandoned. The 2026 setup says the pendulum has swung. Albemarle is the only US-listed pure-play with relevant scale in lithium carbonate and hydroxide, the precise feedstock that flows into lithium-ion cells.
The second tape-read of the week: Lithium Americas (LAC) also showed up on Friday's EV-battery-stocks roundup as a top idea. Not coincidence. The setup is two-layered — higher spot prices plus political tailwind from US onshoring of battery supply chains.
What Traders Should Be Watching
Bull case: lithium spot grinds higher, ALB's capex discipline (no aggressive expansion) flows straight to margins, free cash flow stabilizes. Truist's $245 path is a waypoint, not a ceiling.
Risk: spot is volatile and China tariff news can flip the script overnight. There's also a been-there-done-that dynamic — Truist has lifted the target after every catalyst, and the market has front-run each one. Buying here is not buying the bottom.
What to track: Q2 earnings (margin expansion), Chinese lithium price prints, tariff headlines.
The EV-battery story is not dead. It was just bombed-out. Three Truist upgrades in four months is the kind of footprint a thesis reversal leaves.
