The bid moved down the risk curve

On September 6, a line that had held since December 2024 finally broke: open interest in altcoin perpetuals overtook Bitcoin's. Contracts outside BTC carried roughly $40 billion, while Bitcoin's own perp OI sat at $23.9 billion — about 37% of the combined market. Traders are chasing the faster tape.

Zcash is doing the heavy lifting

Zcash supplied most of the shift. ZEC open interest hit a record $2.4 billion in early September as the token ran 134% over 30 days, tagging $1,023 on September 4 after a single-session pop of roughly 20%. Solana and XRP filled in behind it. The combined cap of coins outside the top 10 has cleared $200 billion, up more than 10% this month.

A crossover with a track record

The last time altcoin OI flipped Bitcoin, in December 2024, several mid-caps corrected hard within weeks. That is a pattern, not a promise: venue mix, leverage caps and exchange composition have all shifted since. Still, the mechanics rhyme. When borrowed money crowds into the laggards, the drop gets steeper. Thinly-margined longs unwind in clusters on the first real reversal.

For positioning, the read is straightforward: the second-tier rally is running on borrowed size. As long as spot demand keeps pace, leverage carries the move. If that demand stalls, liquidation cascades hit ZEC and the thinner names first, and a break below the recent breakout levels would be the first serious tell. Bitcoin looks almost defensive here — anyone trimming risk rotates back into BTC before the altcoin leverage unwinds.
