Raoul Pal Pivots Altcoins to ETH and SOL Over XRP

Pal recalibrates the altcoin book

Real Vision founder and ex-GLG manager Raoul Pal — one of the loudest liquidity bulls in crypto strategy — moved the goalposts on the altcoin trade overnight. The lead picks for the next cycle leg are now Ethereum and Solana, not XRP. His rationale, in his own words: "the worst is over" — shorthand for the global-liquidity drag that has been weighing on risk assets for months.

The Pal framework: liquidity beats narrative

Pal's playbook has not changed: global M2 leads Bitcoin by roughly 12 to 14 weeks, Bitcoin leads alts by another 4 to 6. If the G4 ease through summer — a Warsh-led Fed with a softer reaction function, a BoJ on hold, an ECB unconstrained toward 1.75% — the setup for beta stays intact. ETH and SOL are the cleanest beta carriers in that regime. XRP is not. That's the real read — not the XRP-versus-the-others framing the headline leans on.

What it means in price terms

  • Ethereum has the layer-2 cashflow story (Base, Arbitrum, the recent Ronin migration) and the institutional ETF reality post-GENIUS.
  • Solana is the high-beta leg: SOL/ETH has worked materially higher over twelve months, spot-ETF filings continue working through the SEC, and Solana DEX volume now structurally clears Ethereum's.
  • XRP stays correlated but lacks the same liquidity channel — and lacks the cashflow story ETH and SOL increasingly carry.

Trader implications

Pal's call is not a day-trade — it's a cycle-positioning statement. Two clean ways to express it:

  1. Long ETH/BTC at the lower end of the range with a stop below the year's low. A relative-strength break is the Pal trade.
  2. Long SOL/ETH on weakness, targeting a retrace back toward the 2024 highs.

The risk: a Fed that stays hawkish into Q3 and a DXY that pushes back through 102 collapses the liquidity setup. In that case BTC dominance climbs first, and the alt pivot waits until late Q4.

What to watch

The signal lives in the cross-pair ratios, not the dollar print. If ETH/BTC turns before SOL/BTC, Pal is early. If SOL leads, the risk-on wave is already running. Those are the tapes worth tracking this week — the absolute dollar levels are the noisier read.
