Gold's Worst Week Since 2011 — Silver ETFs Crack 6%

Gold fell nearly 10% and silver ETFs over 6% as Fed rate-hike bets, a firmer dollar and CME margin hikes forced leveraged longs out. Why the bounce is fragile.

Gold's Worst Week Since 2011 — Silver ETFs Crack 6%

For most of 2026, bullion was the trade that simply worked. Last week it stopped working. Gold dropped close to 10% — its sharpest weekly slide since 2011 — and silver fell harder still, with silver ETFs bleeding more than 6% in a matter of sessions. An orderly pullback turned into a broad, leveraged unwind.

Three forces, one direction

The setup is a rare alignment of pressure points. Traders are again pricing Fed rate hikes, and rising real yields are the cleanest headwind there is for a non-yielding asset. The dollar is firmer, lifting the cost of metals for everyone outside the dollar bloc. And the CME has raised margins on gold and silver futures again — higher posting requirements force leveraged longs to sell, the textbook deleveraging loop that turns a dip into a rout.

The inflation angle cuts the other way, and that is the twist. The oil spike from the Iran–Israel flare-up should, on paper, be bullish for gold. This time the market is reading it as a rate story, not a hedge story: more inflation means more tightening, and tightening is winning.

A bounce on thin ice

Both metals are trying to rebound, but volatility is the real headline. Washington postponing planned energy strikes on Iran pulled some risk premium out of the tape and helped the stabilization. It is not a base. With CME margins elevated and the dollar bid, the bulls are working without a floor. The move also bled into bonds and equities at points, a sign this is less a gold-specific wobble than a market-wide repricing of the inflation-and-rates picture.

The trade

The structure has changed. A multi-year uptrend has broken in the near term, and a relief rally is not a bottom. If you are long, anchor the risk to exchange margin decisions and the dollar index — not to a reflexive safe-haven bid that is not showing up. Silver stays the more nervous instrument: higher beta, an industrial leg and less room for error. For tactical setups, the tell is the pace of the bounce. Hold for several sessions and you have a first real signal; fail here and the lower levels come back into play.
