Empire Market: 40 Years Prison, 1,230 BTC Forfeited

Key Takeaways

  • Empire Market co-founder Raheim Hamilton gets 40 years in prison and must hand over about 1,230 BTC.
  • The coins are worth roughly $100 million; whether they flow into the US reserve is still open.
  • Bitcoin trades near $83,000, and weekly momentum remains bullish.

Bitcoin (BTC) is going nowhere this Sunday, with about $83,000 on the clock. A report out of Chicago touches the supply side of the market: a federal court has sentenced Raheim Hamilton, co-operator of the darknet marketplace Empire Market, to 40 years in prison and a $5 million fine. His roughly 1,230 BTC, worth a little over $100 million, go to the state.

Who ends up holding the coins decides the signal

The damage to the price would be small, but the pattern matters. Seized bitcoin can be sold or can vanish into a vault. Since the March 2025 executive order, the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve offers a second option, and a ban on sales generally applies there. Josip Filipovic writes at BTC-ECHO that authorities have not yet confirmed a transfer of these holdings. A bill would lock coins in the reserve for at least 20 years.

Add the holdings of co-defendant Thomas Pavey and the total is about 2,814 BTC. Pavey agreed to forfeit around 1,584 BTC; his sentencing is still pending. Selling that amount would hit a market that is already struggling: according to BTC-ECHO, bitcoin has lost about five percent since the start of the week, and the breakout above $84,410 is considered failed for now.

Empire Market: an AlphaBay clone on the Tor network

BleepingComputer supplies the details of the case, based on the US Department of Justice. Hamilton launched the platform in August 2017 and kept it running until it closed in 2020. It operated as a Tor service and copied the AlphaBay concept. More than four million transactions with over $430 million in volume went through it; drugs accounted for almost $375 million. In August 2020, about 1.68 million users and over 5,000 vendors were registered.

Payment was crypto-only. Sellers were urged by the operators to use mixing services. Hamilton pleaded guilty to a drug conspiracy in January. Besides the bitcoin, forfeiture also covers 24.4 ether (ETH) and three houses in Virginia, according to the prosecutors.

What momentum says

Momentum signals a mixed picture. On the hourly (1h), four-hour (4h) and daily (1D) charts, the state is neutral in each case. On the weekly chart (1W) it remains bullish. The reading was taken this morning at a price of about $83,078. In the short term, direction is missing; the broader trend remains intact according to the indicator.

Scenarios

If bitcoin wins back the zone around $84,410, the breakout that was recently considered failed would be back in play, and the bullish weekly momentum would gain support from the daily chart.

If the price falls back below the recently cited zone around $82,700, the consolidation described by BTC-ECHO gains weight; the neutral daily momentum could then tip toward a weaker reading.

If US authorities move the forfeited coins into the reserve, the case brings no selling pressure. A sale, by contrast, would be a supply of about 2,814 BTC that traders would have to price in. Neither is confirmed at present; this is not investment advice.
