cirBTC: Circle Takes On WBTC on Ethereum
Circle launches cirBTC, a 1:1 bitcoin-backed ERC-20 on Ethereum, challenging WBTC's $9B wrapped-BTC market with Chainlink Proof of Reserve.
Circle muscles into wrapped bitcoin
Circle has gone live with cirBTC on Ethereum mainnet — an ERC-20 token backed 1:1 by native bitcoin. It is the USDC issuer's first direct shot at the wrapped-BTC market, a corner of DeFi that WBTC has owned almost outright with roughly $9 billion in backed bitcoin and about an 85% share.
The pitch is squarely institutional: OTC desks, market makers, lenders and DeFi protocols that want to post bitcoin as collateral inside Ethereum smart contracts without selling the underlying.
The real edge: transparency and no conflict
The structural story is what matters. The underlying BTC sits at a regulated Circle entity, ring-fenced from the corporate balance sheet, with Chainlink Proof of Reserve giving real-time onchain verification of the backing. That is exactly the receipts treasuries have been demanding since the custody questions that dogged WBTC.
Crucially, Circle runs no exchange, no DEX and no lending venue of its own. The firm frames that as the edge: a wrapped-BTC issuer with no competing trading interest. For desks that live and die on counterparty risk, that argument lands harder than any yield.
The timing is rough
Clean as the logic is, the launch drops into an ugly tape. Bitcoin is changing hands near $61,000, total crypto cap is down close to half from its peak, and spot ETFs have bled for weeks. Circle's own stock (CRCL) is already under the microscope on a stretched valuation. A new collateral rail fixes none of that.
The test is adoption, not the launch itself. Does deep institutional capital actually rotate out of WBTC? Until the major DeFi protocols whitelist cirBTC as collateral and liquidity builds, it is a well-built product hunting for a market. Next up: integration with Circle's Arc infrastructure and expansion to more chains.
The trader's read
Structurally this is bullish for Circle's place in the onchain stack — but it is a bet measured in quarters, not days. Near term, CRCL trades on the broad risk-off mood and Fed rate bets far more than on cirBTC. LINK holders should read the Proof-of-Reserve hook as another notch in Chainlink's institutional footprint. The number to watch over the coming weeks: cirBTC's supply curve against WBTC's float.
