Bitcoin Clears $80,000: Biggest Rally Since 2023
Bitcoin broke $80,000 after $1.9B in weekly ETF inflows and its sharpest three-day rally since 2023. A daily RSI of 82 warns the tape is overheating.
The Breakout
Bitcoin cleared $80,000 on Tuesday, the exclamation point on its steepest three-day run since 2023. It closed Monday at $79,272 as 24-hour volume jumped 78%. What spent most of August grinding sideways has turned into a genuine trend.
The engine is the ETF bid. U.S. spot funds took in roughly $1.9 billion in the week to Aug. 21, five straight sessions of inflows and their strongest weekly haul since October 2025. A Treasury buyback operation did the rest, steamrolling shorts positioned for sub-$67,000 prints and forcing a cover that fed straight back into the move.
Altcoins Catch the Bid
The rally isn't Bitcoin's alone. Ether trades near $2,470, its highest since January, and Solana leads the majors with a gain north of 8%. That's capital rotating out of cash and down the risk curve, the textbook sequence of a maturing rally: Bitcoin first, then the large caps, then the alts.
What matters more than the sequence is who is carrying it. This advance rests on ETF inflows and Treasury mechanics, not the leveraged retail money that overheated the 2021 run. Institutional capital buys more slowly, but it also doesn't panic-sell. That makes the trend sturdier while damping the explosive vertical moves traders remember from earlier cycles.
Where the Air Gets Thin
The number traders are watching now is the RSI. On the daily it sits at 82, deep into overbought. History says that rarely marks the top on its own, but it does flag volatility: hot tapes correct hard. Perp funding has almost certainly turned rich, which taxes longs and makes a long squeeze more likely.
The setup cuts both ways. The trend is intact and institutionally funded, and $1.9 billion of ETF inflows is real money, not a leverage mirage. But after a vertical move this steep, a pullback toward the $76,000 area would be healthy consolidation, not a break. Buy here and you're buying strength, and paying the premium for it.
