Visa, Circle and Ripple Back Velocity's Stablecoin Rails

Visa, Circle and Ripple put $10M into stablecoin startup Velocity at a $200M valuation. What the settlement deal means for CRCL, XRP and payments.

Visa, Circle and Ripple Back Velocity's Stablecoin Rails

Three rivals, one cap table

Velocity, a London-based payments startup, extended its Series A by $10 million to $48 million in total. The number is small. The cap table is the story: Visa Ventures, Circle Ventures and Ripple all wrote checks into the same round, alongside Haun Ventures. The raise values Velocity at $200 million. Three firms that earn at different points of the payment stack are now funding the same infrastructure layer.

What Velocity actually does

Velocity builds the settlement layer behind card payments, the part end users never see. It lets banks and payment companies run settlement, liquidity and treasury on stablecoin rails without ripping out the systems they already operate. The platform orchestrates clearing across banks, card networks, processors and digital-asset rails, cutting foreign-exchange friction and speeding cross-border settlement. Cross-border clearing is where the most expensive seconds in payments still sit.

Why the lineup matters

The signal is the coalition, not the cash. Circle brings USDC, Ripple brings a cross-border track record, Visa brings the card network. None of the three wants to cede the settlement layer to the others, so each buys a seat and some optionality in a market that is quietly rewiring itself. The extension follows a $38 million Series A in July led by Dragonfly and FirstMark, with Coinbase Ventures and Capital One Ventures already in.

The tailwind

The round lands as regulated stablecoins move from the grey zone onto the bank balance sheet. Clear US rules and MiCA licensing in Europe strip the legal risk out of back-end use. For payment firms the question shifts from "whether" to "on which rail." Whoever owns the settlement layer sits at the toll booth of that transition.

The trade

For Circle, every embed of USDC into real payment flow chips away at the bear case that CRCL is just a levered bet on reserve yield. For Ripple, it anchors XRP and its rails closer to institutional payments. Neither asset moves on a $10 million check: this is not a catalyst for the tape. It is confirmation of direction. Stablecoins are migrating from speculation into payment plumbing. If you are long CRCL or XRP, the adoption story in the back end is the read that matters, not the daily candles.
