Payrolls Shock Cracks the Dollar as Rate Bets Flip
US payrolls fell 23,000 in July, gutting the Fed hike case. The dollar is selling off, EUR/USD nears 1.16, and gold and silver are ripping to multi-week highs.
The Labour Market Just Broke
The US economy shed 23,000 jobs in July, the first outright decline in months, and it landed against a consensus that had clearly penciled in a gain. This is no rounding error. It pulls the rug from the hawks. For weeks the Fed under Kevin Warsh kept a rate hike on the table, leaning on a firm labour market and sticky inflation. Take the jobs away, and that case collapses. A market that had been pricing tightening now has to rethink the direction entirely.
The Dollar Loses Its Anchor
The move was instant. Ten-year Treasury yields fell, the dollar index slid, and EUR/USD pushed to a three-week high near 1.16. The greenback also gave ground against the yen as the rate differential that propped it up since early summer began to melt. FXStreet calls it an accelerating selling spiral: the dollar is losing the premium that carried it, and until the payrolls weakness is dismissed as noise, the path of least resistance is lower. The next test is the upcoming US inflation print.
Metals and Risk Exhale
Falling real yields are rocket fuel for non-yielding assets. Gold is holding $4,250, and silver just tagged a six-week high to lead the complex, helped along by the sliding dollar. The bid ran wider: equities and bonds rallied together, with the Nasdaq out front, as soft data reopened the case for a cut. The very mechanism that dragged Bitcoin under $63,000 is now running in reverse: the hawkish repricing of the past few weeks is unwinding, and crypto is catching a tailwind from the same source as gold.
What It Means for Traders
The report reshapes the board ahead of the next FOMC meeting. Anyone long the dollar is on the wrong side of it. The line in the sand is 1.1560 on EUR/USD: a clean break confirms the turn. Temper the enthusiasm, though. One soft print does not make a cycle, and a hot inflation number can flip the rate bet within hours. For now, dollar weakness is the dominant cross-asset driver of the week. It lifts the euro, metals and crypto in one move, and turns the greenback into the tell for everything else.
