Ether Clears $2,600, an Eight-Month High, Ahead of the Fed

Relative Strength Beats the Rate Fear

Ethereum pushed above $2,600 on Friday afternoon for the first time in eight months, finally clearing the resistance that had capped every attempt since the start of September. ETH sat near $2,465 just a day earlier, so this is a breakout out of a multi-day coil pressed right against the ceiling — not a random spike.

The timing is what makes it interesting. Earlier the same morning, a hot producer-price print shoved the odds of a September 16 Fed hike to 90%. In that setup, the longest-duration risk asset on the board should be bleeding. Instead, Ether is leaving Bitcoin, XRP and Solana behind.

The ETH/BTC Ratio Turns

The real tell is in the cross. ETH/BTC reclaimed its 20-day moving average in early September and has been grinding higher since — a signal that capital is rotating out of Bitcoin and into Ether inside the majors. Bitcoin itself is still stuck under $82,000 while ETH takes the lead. Rotations like this usually mark the moments when the market starts reaching for beta beyond the king coin again.

The move is riding on steady institutional demand. Spot ether ETFs have been pulling flows for weeks, and a clean break through a level that is both psychological and technical should draw in trend-following systems on top. There is also plain positioning mechanics at work: anyone who was short or sidelined under $2,600 for weeks is now squeezed, so part of this push is covered risk rather than fresh conviction buying.

What Traders Watch Now

This breakout still needs confirmation. A daily close above $2,600 cements the level as fresh support; a slip back below it just ahead of the Fed reads as a fakeout. The FOMC meeting is the sword hanging over the tape: if the 90% hike bet holds and the tone runs hawkish, this relative strength can evaporate fast.

For positioning, the read is clean but conditional. ETH leadership says risk appetite is returning to the majors — but it says it on probation. Anyone chasing the rotation does it with a tight stop under $2,465 and the calendar circled on September 16.
