Apple Overtakes Nvidia as Capex-Light Trade Wins
Apple passes Nvidia as the world's most valuable company and hits a record high before earnings. Why the market is paying up for its capex-light AI bet.
Apple Retakes the Crown
Apple climbed back to the top of the market on Monday, edging past Nvidia to become the world's most valuable company. The stock jumped roughly 3.5% to a record near $337, pushing its market cap back above $4.9 trillion. It's the second lead change in ten days, but this one looks stickier.
The catalyst isn't an Apple headline. It's a wholesale shift in how the market is pricing the AI trade. For months Apple was the laggard: no frontier model, no headline data-center spend, no seat at the capex table. That's now working in its favour. While Nvidia and the broader chip complex burn capital at record pace, Apple monetises AI through services, ecosystem lock-in and hardware upgrades — light on capex, heavy on margin. The stock is up roughly 23% on the year.
China's Chips Hit the Sector
The tailwind is competitors' weakness. Chip stocks sold off hard on Monday after China pushed deeper into memory: the IPO of manufacturer CXMT ripped 466%, and Beijing turned its sights on Taiwan Semiconductor. For Nvidia that's a double hit — fresh geopolitical risk and the prospect of more competition. Apple, meanwhile, is reportedly weighing CXMT and YMTC as memory suppliers to offset costs that have surged nearly 272% on the iPhone 18 Pro. What reads as a threat to the chipmakers looks like a sourcing opportunity for Cupertino.
Thursday Is the Real Test
The rally is running straight into the print. Apple reports fiscal Q3 on July 30, with consensus at $108.1 billion in revenue — flat sequentially but steady — and EPS seen up almost 20% year over year. iPhone 17 demand and services growth are the swing factors. Miss, and the discipline-beats-spend trade loses its footing fast; beat, and the $5 trillion mark comes into view.
For traders the rotation is the trade. As long as the tape rewards capital discipline over growth fantasy, the pressure stays on the pure AI-infrastructure names. Nvidia's crown is wobbling for the first time in months.
